Default The "Invalid" Boat

This is the thread to discuss the newest addition to the devblog, posted by isildur; Basically the idea is that as a pirate, you have to steal a naval ship inorder to get one..but once you've stolen one of these monstrosities, you are a free, open and valid target to everyone.

The pros- about this is of course that the idea of a large fleet hunting said pirate in the fashion some of us visualise, comes to life, and some big ol' chase commenses, which of course is pretty nifty.

Also it's be an effective system to punish pirates for them stealing in the first place, as with theft and inappropiate actions comes concequences, with no exception.

---------------------

The cons - In my opinion, it's pretty darn silly that as a pirate, you aren't able to be the one initiating the PVP, no matter where you are, 'cause you're a pirate after all right? I mean it makes sense to me that as a pirate you don't sit around and wait for the navy ships to amass and wait for them to fire before firing back, thats suicide.

I know if I were a pirate, if I really had to engage naval ships, I'd do so by firing at one at a time, preferrably with only that 1 ship around.

Goes for pretty much all situations - depending on how silly you are, because if you read up on combat tactics of that time, it wasn't a matter of out-smarting your opponent, it was a matter of who had the biggest ship in size and amount...it was first till much later that actual naval tactics were developed and deployed, and even the first ones were very primitive by our standard.

Opinions? Thoughts? Lets hear 'em lads!

I don't like the idea of "valid" ships. If I undestand this correctly, as long as your piloting a valid ship you cannot lose it due to combat ? You sink a high terror of the sea's but you really havn't ? Where's the fun in that ?!?!. There is no living on the edge while you sneak your prized frigate through enemy territory, little satisfaction in putting your arch enemy's feared Ketch to the bottom knowing he will be back and probably in that very same ship. I want to feel the pain of losing mine and the elation of him, losing his.

I agree that the penalties for losing are too soft.

The death penalties as they are currently touted are too arcady. MMO's need to be anything but Arcady.

As far as pirates sailing in SOL's are concerned, it makes sense that once they lose them thjey have to go fight for another. Ships like that are hard enough to replace if you are a naval officer let alone a pirate with no legitimate access to ship yards that are capable of working on large vessels.

My suggestion is that when pirates temporarilly capture a port that they have temporary access to ship yard facilities. This would enable them to have moderate survivability for their ships and also encourage pirates to participate in conquests in a way that could really shake the game up a bit.

Yes, every time i look this game gets less and less pvp friendly, and more and more carebearish in its pvp options.

Its really disappointing

Well, recent posts regarding the economy help to address this.. mainly because the ships apparantly will need refitting if they take too much damage/sink.

I can see the concern here, but also, don't take into account that you can have your friends back you up. What I see so far is that the Brit and the Pirates are in the lead with the French and the Spanish being the underdogs.

I do agree, that if you capture something that large, they are hoping that you just sell it and make money off the sale rather than to have you reuse it.

I'm curious though, will they make the port accessible for repairs? OR..will they leave the option open that the people who man the boats as captains can learn a trade that can teach them to repair their own ships?

I have no use for carebear anything. *shudders* Nor do I like 'gank' groups either. Hopefully there is a happy medium. I'm all for making alliances though between what ever side that will help when the flares go up in the air.

Time shall tell...time shall tell...

Shiplap House, named for its siding normally found on ships. Built in 1715.

Taverns like Shiplap House were important to 18th-century society,
as they were the only place for visitors to eat and sleep.

Just call me Ruby, Ruby Port.
Remember that name...

I have to say that as there is no death penalty, losing one's ship would seem to me to be the ONLY way of adding some spice to the experience. None of the games that I have played recently have had the same pulse-quickening effect of EVE and UO. Why were they a thrill to play? Because a failure on my part cost me something other than 10 minutes of time.

No real penalty = no realistic play
