Not to be vague but... how is this game?

The only experience i've had with a pirate game was Pirates of the Carribean Online, which has a free, 'basic' membership.

It's fun enough, but... There are problems, issues, difficulties. Not just bugs, which I understand, but ALOT of them. Crashes consistantly, graphic glitches, and lag... Wow the lag! I've raided in WoW on this connection, i really shouldn't be rubber-banding on a server labeled "Quiet" as far as population goes

But there are also things I enjoy, and that's why I'm here!

Specifically, i'm interested in ship combat - Do you "crew" a ship yourself, with NPCs, or with other people?

Do you have to be in a "group"/crew to have gunners, or CAN you solo-sail a ship? (as unrealistic as that may be for some ships!) I would probably mostly duo with someone. In POTC, we can get away with it with what we feel to be reasonable success. I really enjoy the feel of manning a cannon with someone steering, or the other way around.

There just isn't a whole lot of customization. Something that, upon reading about THIS game, certainly isn't a problem!

Does anyone have any thoughts or explanations that might help me? It may seem like i'm asking for a review but... actually, that is what i'm looking for, to be honest. :/ On ship combat, and whatever other parts someone may feel is relevant. I looked through the main site but couldn't really get much of a feel. All the little video clips are really short, though I enjoyed watching them.

I'm sorry to drop such a large and vague request, but I thank anyone who has the time to give me any kind of information.
