Yes that's right, there was a time way back when (pre AoE updates) that Eles could farm and take on creatures like Griffons at full health with no protective spirit.
My original character was an Elementalist/Mesmer and found that while griffon farming wasn't as quick as say a Warrior/Monk or Monk/Warrior with Balthazars Aura it was at least possible.
